The need to use it as a PWA on mobile may be too annoying for you, but I mainly use mobile for viewing and not editing notes so its fine for my use case. I have some minor grievances with it, but nothing in the FOSS world compares to it as a self-hosted knowledge base tool that I have found so far (AnyType maybe one day). I do like Joplin and used it for some time, but I ended up moving away from it. It's not free, so if you're looking for a free alternative, you could try Notepad++ or Standard Notes. QOwnNotes is a desktop application optimized for single users (but you still can sync your markdown files as you like) and not very opinionated on how your markdown files look. I saw some Joplin suggestions from some other comments. HedgeDoc is a (self hosted) online solution with collaborative features.
